About

Studio Mend is a design studio currently based in Oslo, Norway.

The studio specialises in visible mending and design revolving around giving our most treasured garments a second life. The aim is to bring awareness to the potentials of repair and inspire people to take better care of their garments and use them longer.

Sunniva’s repair work is playful and delicate, minimalistic and often inspired by organic shapes found in nature. She has a big love for (and has her main focus on) colour. Her work balances between careful composition and the randomness of the fault in the garment, using the imperfection and repair to heighten the quality of the garment.

Studio Mend does collaborations and project based work, workshops and repairs on request.

Mending techniques

Studio Mend is currently using two techniques for repair work; The Island Weave and Edge Mend. The techniques are based on traditional repair and embroidery techniques, and have been given new names by Sunniva with the intention of creating new and more contemporary associations with repair.

Island Weave

Is based on the traditional technique called «darning», which has been used all over the world for many hundreds of years. The technique creates a new layer of textile over holes, stains or worn out areas of textile. It works very well on both woven and knitted textiles, but particularly on denser textiles . Also on those areas which need to be flexible, like an elbow or knee can benefit from the Island Weave technique.

Edge Mend

Is based on an embroidery technique, and can be used to close up the edge of a hole or to cover up a stain. The technique can be used in many different ways and can have countless variations in pattern and shape.
